Today it struck me that the same approach could have it’s benefits in solar firecraft. I have explained the method using one pair of glasses in “Pencil Shavings Make Great Tinder“. The challenge with one pair of glasses is that it may be marginal in heat potential and the focal point can be quite a distance from lens-to-tinder. By using two glasses together you get greater heat at half the distance which is much more convenient and easier to control.

I happened to be visiting an industrial facility at the time and it was early evening with the sun lowering on the horizon. I grabbed a small amount of dry shredded bark mulch off of the landscaping and located two pairs of reading glasses. I spotted a friend who I asked to take pictures with my phone’s camera while I began to focus on the tinder. Although the wind was rather brisk, in short order smoke began to appear and with continued focus a large sized ember took shape. I set down the glasses and clutched the tinder and began to blow the ember into a flame. My friends cheered and we were delighted with the results.

Now that we have passed the Spring Solstice, experiments like this are performed much easier. Reading glasses are straight forward magnifiers whereas prescription glasses my not have the same capability due to various optical corrections. In any case, it would be wise to familiarize yourself with this solar fire method because you never know when it might be needed in an emergency.

Nothing looks familiar but fortunately you have a map of the region. The only problem is that the overhead light is marginal and you’re over 40 now and the fine print is only a blur. Your spouse offers their reading glasses that you put on with resignation. However, that small type still eludes you. You remember that you keep a spare set of reading glasses in the glove compartment so you take them out to see if they work any better, but they seem to be the same level of magnification. All of a sudden a brain storm strikes… what would happen if you combined the two glasses and wear both of them at the same time? Voilà ! The fuzziness becomes clear enough to read and you are able to find your present location and the means to reach your destination.

In my case, my wife taught me this trick when I couldn’t read the numbers on my old cell phone. I was truly amazed and now I’m eager to pass this trick on to all the newbies in the reading glasses crowd.

If you use reading glasses and haven’t tried this method yet, you need to give it a try… you too will find it amazing!

Cedar is a good wood for fire by friction. It heats fast, but also cools fast, but that’s another blog. The best sharpener for wood pencils is a rotary sickle model. This is the type that is cranked by hand and has a built-in basket to catch the shavings. Many electric sharpeners use sickle blades as well. The office “abo (aboriginal)” can collect this tinder by offering to clean out all the pencil sharpeners which might get some raised eyebrows but will be appreciated by all. The downside is that the graphite powder is a little annoying.

During a lunch break you can take a pair of drugstore reading glasses, 2 1/2 power or higher preferred, and head outdoors for a little solar firecraft practice. You can’t really focus on fluff, so pinch the pencil shavings into a tight clump, then focus the lens on it. When smoke appears, blow lightly and keep the focal point on the edge of the new ember to increase it’s size. To stay focused on the same place may just consume that spot and not build. I’ve also used pencil shavings with a light-bulb filament to start a fire. And of course, a ferrocerium stick works great. If you don’t have a sickle style sharpener, try visiting the local flea market or thrift store and start having some fun.

I’ve had some feedback from site visitors who have viewed the “Emergency Magnifier” video on Metacafe, and have had the opportunity to try it out in real life. One visitor from Colorado forgot her glasses in her bedroom where her husband was sleeping, and rather than wake him up, she used a medicine box lid into which she poked a hole with a needle. She was then able to read the medical data on an eyedrop bottle successfully. I’ve used my pocket pinhole card to read serial numbers on equipment while filling out data sheets. Let me know if you’ve tried it yet. Visit my Contact page and let me know how it worked for you.
