Puffball mushrooms are quite unique in appearance as they are round whitish to beige colored balls on the ground typically in open grassy areas. They often appear after warm moist weather conditions in the Summer or Fall . They can range in size from ping-pong balls to basket balls. they are very easy to identify and they do not have many poisonous look-a-likes.
A fresh puffball will be completely white inside, much like a marshmallow. If there is any discoloration inside it is unfit for consumption. I usually sauté slices in butter but a friend suggested that I dredge the slices in egg and milk with a little flour and dip them in some shredded Parmesan cheese so that’s next on my menu. The texture of a puffball is so tender that it just melts in your mouth.
I am grateful to have friends that have experience and expertise in this field. I recommend that you find someone in your area with the same credentials or locate a local mushrooming club to learn more and have a source for positive identification.
